Web Design & Development

There are a lot of things to consider when developing a website – what web building platform should I use? Which hosting service has the best deal? Where do I buy a domain? I help you answer those questions while also building an engaging and dynamic website that’s optimized for efficiency and fast load time.

Step 1: Choosing Platform and Hosting

There are a number of web builders out there—WordPress, Wix, WebFlow, and a few that don’t even start with ‘W’—and it can be overwhelming to choose which one to go with. I’ve worked with almost every web builder out there and I know how to help you decide which will be best for you. We go over questions like:

  • What kind of content will be on your site? Most have the basic elements of a home page, services page, blog, etc… Others might be more complicated, like hosting courses or a store.
  • How involved do you want to be in ongoing updates? If you’d like to be able to make your own simple updates without having to learn complex new software, certain solutions will be easier than others.
  • Do you want extensive custom coding or special features? Most web builders are flexible and offer plugins to make almost anything you imagine possible. Almost anything. Some very specific requests may have to be custom-coded, and some platforms can accommodate that better than others.

Step 2: Design

I work 1) with clients who may already have a strong brand, or even an existing website with a design they like, and 2) clients who are just starting the business and need to establish their brand from the ground up. My design services include:

  • Brand Consultation: If your business is a blank slate, I bring my decade of expertise working across industries to help your brand find its visual voice. I will do the research to find comparable brands and present them to you. Most importantly, I listen to what you want your brand to be.
  • Design Options: I create several design options for a few major pages of the website based on the consultation that you can choose from. If needed, I also offer one major redo of your favorite design.
  • Graphics & Icons: While there are many graphics and icons readily available in design applications, some industries and businesses are specific enough that they need their own custom creations.

Step 3: Build

Now, I bring the design to life on the web builder we chose in Step 1. This includes:

  • Putting Together the Site: Building the pages, sections, and elements of the website and ensuring the site meets ADA compliance requirements.
  • Choosing Plugins/Apps: Plugins are pre-coded apps that enable more complicated visual elements and interactions—think carousels, online stores, even blogs. There are many competitors in the plugin space, so knowing which plugins to choose for which web builder saves a lot of time and limits potential tech issues.
  • Setting up Domain & Hosting: Before the site can go live (and sometimes before we start the build) we will need to secure a hosting provider which may or may not be the same as the web builder. We will also need to purchase a domain, which could come with the host/web builder or could be purchased separately.

Step 4: SEO & Ads

Having your website is great and all, but what if people can’t find it? That’s where SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and Digital Ads come in. Depending on your goals and constraints, we can do one or the other or both. There is a lot of flexibility here.

  • SEO: Good SEO involves more than just having a nice website. There are tricks to writing the content, including how many keywords to use (and how many is too much), how to define headings versus body text, and how to phrase content to be more appealing to search engines. Now, there’s also the added step of configuring your content for AI crawlers.
  • Ads: When you hear ads, you may think of those popups that appear on the side of digital news articles, interruptions to your Instagram scrolling, or ‘sponsored’ results when you search in google. Depending on your industry and your target market, some or all of these may be appropriate. I help you decide what ads to run, choose where to run them, and manage your ongoing campaigns.
